Amazon brand name ideas, and the trademark you need
On Amazon, your brand name does two jobs. Shoppers have to remember it, and a trademark office has to accept it, because Amazon Brand Registry asks for a trademark. Here is how to pick a name that can do both, with 36 ideas to start from.
What Amazon Brand Registry asks for
According to Amazon's Brand Registry page, you need:
- A pending or registered trademark for your brand name or logo, from the government trademark office of a country with an Amazon store.
- A word mark or a design mark that includes words, letters or numbers.
- Your brand name on the product or packaging, permanently, as part of a logo.
Amazon says enrolling is free. Brand Registry unlocks tools such as A+ Content for richer listings and reports for suspected copies of your products.
Six rules for an Amazon brand name
1. Invent or borrow, don't describe
Names that only describe the product (“Soft Dog Beds”) are hard to register. Invented words (“Snoutly”), borrowed words (“Ironfern” for fitness gear) or names that hint at a benefit are much easier to protect.
2. Keep it short and easy to spell
Shoppers type it into Amazon search after seeing it once. Two syllables to four is the sweet spot.
3. Search trademarks in your class
Use the free USPTO trademark search (and your own country's office if you sell elsewhere). Look for names that sound or look alike in the same kind of product.
4. Stay clear of famous brands
“Nikey” or anything close to a big brand invites a takedown, even in a different category.
5. Make sure it works on a label
Your name will be printed on the product or box. Short names fit small packaging and read at a glance in a thumbnail.
6. Grab the .com and the handles
Many shoppers check a brand's own site before buying. A matching .com and social handle make you look established.

Questions sellers ask
Can I join Amazon Brand Registry with a pending trademark?
Yes. Amazon asks for a pending or registered trademark for your brand name or logo, issued by the government trademark office of a country that has an Amazon store.
Does Amazon Brand Registry cost money?
Amazon says enrolling is free. The trademark itself has a government fee; at the U.S. office the base filing fee is $350 per class of goods or services.
Why do trademark offices refuse some brand names?
A name that only describes the product, such as "Best Yoga Mats", is hard to register because other sellers need those words too. Invented words and names that hint at a benefit without describing it are much easier to protect.
Do I need a lawyer to file a trademark?
U.S. law does not require one for owners based in the U.S., but a trademark attorney can spot problems early. Amazon's IP Accelerator program connects sellers with vetted law firms.
Not legal advice. Amazon's rules and government fees change. Check the linked pages for the current version, and talk to a trademark attorney before you invest in inventory.
