Five tips for a store name that sells

  1. 1. Keep it short

    Under 15 characters fits an Etsy banner, a phone screen and a shipping label. It also fits Etsy’s 20-character limit.

  2. 2. Leave room to grow

    “Candle Corner” struggles when you add soap. A broader name with a tagline (“Willow & Wick — small-batch candles”) grows with you.

  3. 3. Say it out loud

    If people can’t spell it after hearing it once, word of mouth breaks. Skip numbers, hyphens and odd spellings.

  4. 4. Match the domain and handles

    A matching .com and @handle make you look established and help repeat buyers find you.

  5. 5. Make it ownable

    Distinctive names are easier to protect as trademarks than plain descriptions like “Best Handmade Jewelry”.

How long can an Etsy shop name be?

Etsy says shop names must be 4 to 20 characters, with no spaces or special characters, no profanity, not already in use and not infringing a trademark. You can change it later in Shop Manager.

Do I need my own domain for a Shopify store?

No. Every Shopify store gets a myshopify.com address, which Shopify lets you change only once. Most sellers connect their own domain, such as yourstore.com, so it is easier to remember and share.

Should my store name say what I sell?
