Small Business Saturday checklist

Eight steps for the week before November 28. Every rule links to the page we read it on, on October 23, 2026.

  1. Get on the Shop Small Map

American Express says listing your business on its Shop Small Map is free, and updates can take up to 3 days to show (American Express). Its holiday guide says to update your profile with holiday business hours, add your website and connect your social media channels (Amex marketing guide).

  2. Download the free official materials

American Express offers free Shop Small marketing materials, from social posts to printable signs (American Express), and the SBA links to them too (SBA). Their terms say the materials may not be modified except as American Express directs or authorizes, and they’re licensed for promoting your business in connection with Small Business Saturday and Shop Small (terms of use). This post maker draws your own words, not their logo, so use both.

  3. Set your special hours on Google

In your Business Profile, go to Edit profile, then Hours, then Special hours, pick the date and save. Google suggests confirming your hours for official holidays even when they don’t change, and special hours only show if your business hours are set to “Open with main hours” (Google Business Profile Help).

  4. Post before, on the day and after

The American Express guide suggests planning posts for before, during and after the day, posting 1–2 times a week on Facebook and Instagram, keeping videos to 7–15 seconds with captions, and using 3–5 relevant hashtags, including #SmallBusinessSaturday or #SBS (Amex marketing guide). The SBA uses #ShopSmall (SBA).

  5. Price your deal honestly

If you post a “was” price, the FTC’s pricing guides say it should be the actual, bona fide price you offered to the public on a regular basis for a reasonably substantial period of time, not a price raised just so you can cut it (16 CFR 233.1). “Free gift wrapping” or “a free cookie with every order” avoids the question.

  6. Selling gift cards? Know the federal rules

The money on a store gift card can’t expire for at least five years from the day it was issued or last loaded. An inactivity fee is allowed only after a year with no use, no more than once a month, and only if it’s stated on the card. Loyalty, award and promotional cards are excluded from most of these rules (Regulation E, 12 CFR 1005.20).

  7. Plan shipping for gifts ordered that day

For delivery before December 25 in the lower 48 states, USPS recommends sending USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail by December 17, Priority Mail by December 18 and Priority Mail Express by December 19, 2026 (USPS).

  8. Say thank you on Sunday

Pick “Thank you for shopping small” in the maker above and post it the next day. People who found you on Saturday see that you noticed.

Why it’s worth the effort: 62.7 million people shopped in person on Small Business Saturday 2025, up from 61.1 million in 2024 (SBA, citing NRF). Not legal or tax advice; this checklist summarises the linked pages as of October 23, 2026.
